THE OVERCOMER

CHAPTER THREE
(Continued)

Sam did well at school, working hard at whatever he did. By the time, he had a position at his father's firm which was now known as Solomon and Son Sweets.

The years passed, his father aged and retired and Sam became the person in charge, but he did not change the name of the business.

One day a worker reported there was a man waiting, who had begged to see him as he said he knew him and needed work.

Sam recognised Nicholas Kirby even though he was no longer a young boy. He begged for a job, saying that he had a wife and children to support and had just lost his last employment. Kirby could produce no references nor testimonials of any kind.

Sam wanted to send him on his way. However, he agreed to a month's trial. Later, he felt very uneasy and called in a trusted worker to check on Kirby and see where he lived.

When the worker returned, it was revealed Kirby rented a small room nearby. There was no wife. There were no children. Sam Cowan had friends in the police force and checked there.

Kirby had been in prison for swindling several businesses. He was also known to be violent.

Kirby was confronted by this information. "I only wanted a chance," he told Sam, "but now, I swear, I will get even with you for this."
